Course: Immersive Storytelling: Games
"Immersive Storytelling: Games" is a collaborative semester project offered by the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film (HFF) Munich and the Technische Universität München (TUM). The course is designed to unite students from both institutions to develop video game prototypes.
The course is divided into two main parts: a concept phase and a development phase. In a 2.5 weeks block seminar, students are introduced to the fundamentals of narrative and game design through lectures and practical exercises. Teams are formed in the second week, focusing on morning sessions covering various aspects of the gaming industry and afternoon sessions dedicated to developing concepts for the prototypes. The theory phase concludes with the presentation and discussion of these concepts and the creation of a roadmap for each project.
Over the following five months, students work on developing their prototypes as per the established roadmaps. They maintain the same team configurations throughout the semester and receive guidance from both content and technical mentors. The course includes regular checkpoint meetings to review progress and networking events featuring speakers from the game industry. Over the semester, students from HFF have the unique opportunity to work towards their technical degree through active participation in this course. The semester concludes with a presentation of the prototypes, which students can opt to showcase at a local indie game developers meeting.
This course offers an exceptional opportunity for students to engage deeply in creative game development, leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration and industry insights to produce innovative game experiences.
