Song of Endrak

"Song of Endrak" is a location-based strategy game for mobile platforms from 2014. The game was developed for the lecture "Social Gaming" at the university.

The Idea: The game was inspired by the idea of merging location-based games like Ingress with strategy games like Heroes of Might and Magic III. (We played a lot of Ingress during that time.) We wanted to combine the strategic depth of the turn-based classics with the social experience of a location-based multiplayer game–all within the context of the real world. So instead of controlling an avatar in a virtual world, you explore the real world together with friends, conquering territories, and engaging in epic adventures.

Gameplay: The game loop is quite simple. You start with your own city and recruit armies to join your mission. You can expand your city with resources to recruit more powerful creatures. After joining a faction, you travel through the lands to expand your territory. The game world is covered with locations you can conquer to loot resources and give yourself a strategic advantage. In order to conquer a specific location, you'll take part in battles that will demand all your strategic talent. The game has a turn-based combat system based on different unit types and battlefield variations, with an emphasis on simple mechanics that offer profound strategic possibilities.

Real World: All activities on the game map are based on your real-world location. The in-game locations are based on special real-world places, such as famous landmarks, statues, gas stations, or city parks. In addition, real-world conditions such as weather and daytime influence the battles. Together with friends, you form alliances to conquer your virtual neighborhood for your faction.
